On a recent episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live!, the hilarious late night host interviewed Academy Award and Golden Globe winner Matthew McConaughey. McConaughey came on the show to promote his newest film, Gold. In the movie, McConaughey plays a businessman down on his luck who teams up with a geologist and discovers a huge gold deposit in the jungles of Indonesia. The film is based on the true story of the Bre-X mining scandal that occurred in 1993.
In true Jimmy Kimmel style, though, the host had a more random and interesting question to ask the actor. Most people who are named Matthew go by the nickname Matt, so Kimmel asked McConaughey if he ever answers to that name. McConaughey said he does not and the reason why reaches all the way back to his childhood. When McConaughey was a kid, he was playing at school with a new friend who addressed him as “Matt” and asked if he wanted to play on the monkey bars. McConaughey agreed when suddenly he was grabbed by the shoulders. His mother, who was also his kindergarten teacher, scolded him for answering to the nickname. She said “Don’t you ever answer to Matt again. I named you Matthew from the Bible.” He listened to his mother and has gone by his full name ever since.
