World famous talk show host Oprah Winfrey is attempting to address the numerous criticisms following her Twitter post of President Obama meeting with President-elect Donald Trump. Underneath a picture of Trump and Obama meeting in Washington D.C., Winfrey tweeted “Everybody take a deep breath! #HopeLives!”
Winfrey sent out this tweet on November 10th at 3:10PM. Almost immediately after she posted this tweet, Winfrey faced extreme criticism from her followers on Twitter. People accused Winfrey of “normalizing” President-elect Donald Trump.
Critics of Trump told Winfrey she was “too intelligent to believe that.” Some even threatened Winfrey, writing tweets like “DON’T YOU DARE OPRAH,” and “please do not normalize this man. Minority children are already being targeted.”
Winfrey addressed this issue with filmmaker Ava DuVernay after the first screening of a documentary called “13th.” When the results from the election came in on November 8th, Winfrey said she literally couldn’t breath deeply after hearing that Trump won. It wasn’t until she saw both Obama and Trump in the same room acting civil towards each other that she was able to take a deep breath again.
Although she did not take back her statement, Winfrey wished she could have rephrased it. Winfrey said, “you can never talk to everybody” on social media. She went on to say that she should have written, “I just took a deep breath #CivilityLives.”
Winfrey went on to say she was surprised just how civil the Trump transition has been thus far. However, she understands just how tense this election cycle was, and her tweet was only a representation of her own perspective at the time.
