The musician Seal has criticized Oprah Winfrey for her much-lauded speech at Th, arguing that her comments about discrimination and abuse in Hollywood are hypocritical.
On his Instagram account, Seal posted pictures of Oprah hanging out with Harvey Weinstein, the producer whose alleged crimes brought on the ongoing #MeToo and Time’s Up movements. In one she seems to be kissing him on the cheek.
Over the pictures, Seal wrote “When you have been part of the problem for decades… but suddenly they all think you are the solution.” Under the pictures he added the comment “Oh I forgot, that’s right….. you’d heard the rumours but you had no idea he was actually serially assaulting young stary-eyed [sic] actresses who in turn had no idea what they were getting into. My bad.” He added the tag #SanctimoniousHollywood.
Chrissy Teigen was one of the celebrities who came to Oprah’s defense, saying that everyone has heard rumors about everyone, apparently implying that it would have been irresponsible for Oprah (or others) to act on mere speculation.
Seal’s comments come after much praise for Oprah’s speech, which she made while accepting the Cecil B. DeMille Award. (She is the first black women to receive this honor.) she called for an end of bigotry and a furtherance of women’s rights, and won praise from everyone to Hollywood insiders to the president’s daughter, Ivanka Trump. Many are even calling for her to run for president in the next election, which is in 2020.
