How Rian Johnson Prevented “Star Wars” Spoilers

Rian Johnson used a fairly simply trick to make sure that spoilers for his new movie, Star Wars: The Last Jedi, didn’t get released to the public: he just avoided connecting to the internet.

“I typed Episode VIII out on a MacBook Air. For security it was ‘air-gapped’ — never connected to the internet. I carried it around and used it for nothing except writing the script,” he explained in an interview with The Wall Street Journal.

Though of course, the device itself constituted a possible security breach for the precious information, which is why he kept it in a safe at the Pinewood Studios. “I think my producer was constantly horrified I would leave it in a coffee shop,” he quipped.

The strategy proved quite effective; while there was much speculation about the film and its many mysteries, none of its secrets were leaked before release, which these days is quite impressive.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi has naturally been a financial success, earning $1.230 billion after about a month. It has also proven to be quite different than other Star Wars flicks, which has proven somewhat controversial among the fanbase. Critics generally liked the newer take on the franchise and its themes, while debate rages among the average viewer about whether or not Johnson took the series in a good direction.

Meanwhile, Solo: A Star Wars Story is expected for release soon, scheduled for release May 25, 2018.
