Another student stated that he is grateful for the help, motivation, and guidance Michael Lacey gave to him and attributed the award he had to the professor. A student who hated working in a group and even chose mathematics as a major because there is usually no group work said Mr. Lacey changed his perspective on group work.
Michael Thoreau Lacey under the guidance of Walter Philipp earned his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois at Urbana in 1987. His thesis was about the probability in Banach spaces.
He solved a law of the iterated logarithm for empirical characteristic functions problem. Michael received a National Science Foundation at the Indiana University and he started a study of the bilinear Hilbert transform. Later on, Christoph Thiele and Michael Lacey solved the transform and even won the Salem Prize.
After his doctorate, Michael Thoreau Lacey worked at Louisiana State University and the University of North Carolina. Mr. Lacey and Walter Philipp proved the central limit theorem while the professor was at the University of North Carolina. In 1989, Mr. Thoreau Lacey joined the Indiana University and worked up to 1996. After leaving the Indiana University, he joined the Georgia Institute where he is currently lecturing.
Michael Thoreau Lacey has been a fellow of the American Mathematical Society for almost five years. He also received a Guggenheim Fellowship to work with Xiaochun Li. Michael has written several publications on mathematics and won prices on his work and research.
Throughout the years, he has put his focus in areas of probabilities, harmonic analysis, and ergodic theory. Michael Thoreau Lacey is a renowned mathematician who has a great impact on a lot of people even more on his students. His passion for solving mathematics problems shows how much he loves the subjects.
